It is believed that the Upper Mustang trek winds its route through the sheltered Buddhist landscape that is part of the Kingdom of Mustang which is sometimes referred as Lo. This remote mountain region is bordered by Tibet and has distinctive Tibetan impression both in its people and their culture, as well as in its desert landscape with mountains with high cliffs, and rocks with bizarre shapes and colors. The trek passes through Kagbeni the gateway for Upper Mustang, then on through a stark landscape within the shadow of rain on the Dhaulagiri mountain range to Lo-Manthang, which is the seat of previous Kings of the Lo Kingdom.
Explore caves as well as monasteries, rock art and gompas and discover about the rich culture of this region. Panoramic perspectives of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and many more. Inside Lo Manthang itself a visit to Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar, the last village of the main one in the northwest region along with the palace of the King, will provide an understanding of the culture of the region.
Additionally, there is the amchi (traditional Tibetan doctor) museum and a school where visitors can find out more about this ancient healing art, and learn how it's being developed to modern times. Just a few hours' walk away from Lo Manthang is Gyakar with its famous Gompa. Ghar Gompa is over 1,200 years old and committed to Guru Rinpoche, who travelled in these regions.
The Gompa is well-known for its rock art as well as the fact that there is a belief that when your wish is made there, it will be fulfilled. Make a wish at Ghar Gompa. Ghar Gompa, and hope to visit again one day! The trek is in higher altitude (3,000m up to 3800m) that is enhanced due to dry air.
Although it's not a problem for people who are born at this height to be able to speed through the city; however, those who visit will take their time and be relaxed in their trek to avoid altitude-related issues. Walking can last between five to seven hours per day, and certain paths are especially dusty and windy.
However, this trip goes through the restricted region of Upper Mustang, which in part follows the old salt trail, will be a memory that will be etched in the memories for the rest of their lives.
Because of the high elevation and the dry climate this is considered to be an extremely difficult hike. While you observe the locals zoom at a rapid pace, you're trying to take a breather and think. Like all treks within the Nepal Himalayas, you will encounter steep climbs and downs that will test you. Passes with high elevations to cross and steep downs to climb.
There are also stunning mountains and the fact that you are in the beautiful Kingdom of Lo to pay for your expenses. In terms of weather, as far as it is concerned, considering that this trek falls in rain shadow, it is possible to complete this trek all year long. We don't suggest taking this trek in winter months when the snow is icy and many people leave for Pokhara as well as Kathmandu to get rid of the winter. What we mean is that you can go on this trek during the monsoon (June through September) without worrying about flooding and slippery trails. As with the majority of treks in Nepal we suggest you're in good condition of fitness. You should also do some extra exercise or time hiking before you leave.
